"The poetry of Franz Schubert, the melancholy of Chopin, the grace, lightness and brilliance of Mozart - all this can be found in Deutscher's piano treasures." (Saarland Radio)
Alma Deutscher, born 2005, is a composer, violinist and pianist. She started playing the piano when she was two years old and the violin when she was three. When she was 6, she completed her first piano sonata, and at 7 she composed a short opera, The Sweeper of Dreams. Aged 9, Alma wrote a concerto for violin and orchestra. Aged 12, she completed her first piano concerto. Between the ages of 8-12, Alma composed a full length opera, Cinderella. Alma has featured prominently in the international press and media. Her YouTube channel has nearly 10,000,000 views and nearly 100,000 subscribers.
On Oct 20, 2019, Alma received the European Culture Prize in a ceremony at the Vienna State Opera. After thanking her Laudator baritone Thomas Hampson for his generous words of praise, Alma made a plea for melody and for harmony in the modern world:
Maybe this award today means that a more tolerant age is dawning, when melody and beauty will once again be permitted. Perhaps this is a message that there is more to European Culture than just dissonance. Perhaps there is also a place in European Culture for harmony.
